On Thursday, July 19, 2018, the NCWorks Career Center in Bladen County hosted a Stand Down event at the National Guard Armory in Bladen County. The Stand Down event, with a theme of “Veterans Helping Veterans to Succeed,” assisted veterans and their families with different resources, services, and supports available to them. This was the first Stand Down event in the Bladen County area. There were approximately two hundred and thirty (230) individuals in attendance including veterans, their families, and the general public. Thirty (30) vendors were represented to assist veterans and their families including NCWorks Career Centers in Bladen & Robeson Counties, Fayetteville VA Medical Center, DAV Chapter 99, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Cumberland County Veteran Services, American Legion Post 404, Bladen Community College, VA Regional Office-Winston Salem, NC Housing Finance Agency, Social Security Administration, and Bladen County Vocational Rehabilitation. Access to resources, services and support were provided to veterans and families including veteran benefits, legal services, veteran educational opportunities, employment and job counseling, medical/dental screenings, homeless prevention assistance, recovery and mental health assistance, possible housing and emergency shelter assistance, massages, chaplain services, toiletries, and a variety of other offerings.
